Care & Growing

Site: full sun
Planting depth: surface sow
Day to germinate: 10 to 20 days
Plant spacing: 6 in
Pinch: not necessary
Bloom time: late summer to fall
Days to maturity: 140 to 150 days
Start seeds early —about 20–24 weeks before your last frost date— as they take time to reach transplant size.
Sow the tiny, light-dependent seeds on the surface of a fine seed-starting mix and do not cover. Keep them evenly moist and warm (around 70–75°F / 21–24°C) until germination, which can take 10–20 days. Good light and gentle air movement help prevent damping off. Cinnamon can be sprinkled on top of the soil to help with algae.
Once seedlings have a few sets of true leaves, pot them up. It's important to continue potting them up as the growth will stunt otherwise. Transplant into the garden after danger of frost has passed, or up to 6 weeks before your last frost date with added protection when temperatures reach below zero. Space about 6–8 inches apart in a sunny, well-drained spot. Lisianthus thrive with consistent moisture and regular light feedings through the season.
Pinch when young to encourage branching. In our experience, pinching does not delay bloom time.

Harvesting

Disbud the first flower that opens to encourage the rest of the buds to open together. Harvest when at least three blooms on the stem are fully open for a full, abundant look and best vase life.
